Steinsberg Castle
Staufer castle with the unique eight-cornered keep
Kraigaus Compass – a favorite destination along the Burgenstraße

Steinberg Castle, between Sinsheim and Weiler and visible from afar, was called the “compass on the Kraichgau” early in the region’s history. Historical drawings of the mountain and the castle date back to the early Middle Ages. It saw many dynasties through the centuries. The poet Spervogel sang about the castle in his love songs during the second half of the 12th Century.
From the 13th – 15th Century, the castle was the domicile of a Palatine office for administration property holdings in southwest Kraichgau. The castle has been property of the City of Sinsheim since 1973, which has since invested significant amounts of sums in its maintenance.
Today, a castle restaurant is housed in the former residential and commercial buildings. With its rustic space, the restaurant provides home-style cooking and excellent wines from the region to satisfy visitors.
From the keep, you can enjoy a superb panoramic view. When the weather is nice, you can see the “King’s Chair” near Heidelberg, the Katzenbuckel to the northwest (nature reserve Neckartal/Odenwald), Stromberg to the south, and Philippsburg (Palatine Forest) to the west, as well as much more.
The romantic and idyllic castle courtyard is available for cultural events. During summer months, there are regular cultural highlights such as castle festivals, theater performances and the Steinsberg Festival.
Today, this unique castle is a favorite destination along the Burgenstraße in Kraichgau. Interesting tours introduce visitors not only to the architectural history, but also the secrets of its residents.
