Museums at the Lerchennest
King Frederick Wilhelm I preferred to stay in barns when traveling, as the hygienic conditions were often better there than in castles and houses belonging to “high society.”
In Steinsfurt, the king stayed at an estate and the barn across the road was reserved for his son and his son’s adjutants.
This estate, built in Franconian style in the early 17th Century, presented a U form that is open to the street. On the north side, there are half-timbered houses in a row with gables and the residential and estate sides are turned to the sun.
The back is the barn where Frederick spent the night.
The U ends in three sheds, which had also been used as a cow and sow stall.
he estate was property of the Sinsheim Foundation until approx. 1750.
The crown prince joked when he discovered that the estate belonged to a farmer named Lerch (“Lark”).
