Monument to Liberty

The inscription, “for liberty, justice and unity 1848-1998”, runs around the column along with the faces of the five most important strugglers for democracy from Sinsheim: Friedrich Hecker, Gustav Mayer, Franz Sigel, Karl Bauer and Eduard Speiser. Their dream of liberty was not fulfilled then and the unfinished top of the column is a symbol for the continued daily fight in democracy for liberty, justice and unity today. In one of the “48er” songs, the lyrics call: “Let’s do, let’s do something about it!”

The monument was inaugurated on 3 May 1998 for the 150th anniversary of the German democratic movement of 1848-49, Monument inauguration, 1998
