Sinsheim was a stronghold during the German democracy and liberty movement of 1848-49. At the Historic City Hall (now the City and Liberty Museum), the pharmacist Mayer declared the democratic republic and then marched with 250 armed franctireurs toward Heidelberg to support the Hecker Revolt there…
Sinsheim has an interesting and changeful history. It was a free imperial city during the Middle Ages with the right to hold markets and mint coins. In 1525, peasants and citizens fighting for their freedom fought the arbitrariness of the canons and aristocracy at Steinsberg Castle, after which the city suffered many devastating wars. Sinsheims citizens, however, did not give up and built their beautiful city hall using latticed framework only a few years following the fire of 1689…
